What Is DTF Printing and Why Does It Matter?

Direct to Film transfers — commonly known as DTF — have taken the custom apparel industry by storm. Although the technology has existed for years, recent improvements have made it the go-to solution for full-color, detailed designs that screen printing cannot economically produce in small quantities. As a result, customers who previously had limited options now have virtually unlimited creative freedom.

The process starts with a design created in any platform — Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Canva, Procreate, or even an AI design tool. Next, the design is printed onto a special transfer sheet and then heat pressed directly onto the garment. Because the process requires no screens or minimums, small orders and complex artwork are no longer cost-prohibitive.

At Rebyl, we invested in the best DTF printer in the industry — the Epson DTF — after testing several options. Consequently, our transfers hold up wash after wash, which is not something every DTF provider can claim. Quality matters at every step of our process, and DTF is no exception.

Pros and Cons of DTF Transfers

Before placing your order, it is helpful to understand where DTF excels and where screen printing may still be the better choice. Therefore, we always recommend discussing your project with our team so we can point you in the right direction.

Advantages of DTF printing:

  • Unlimited colors — no restrictions on design complexity
  • Economical for low-quantity orders with no minimums
  • Works on most fabrics including jackets, hoodies, and performance wear
  • Fast turnaround, especially when you stock extra transfers for inventory

Things to consider before choosing DTF:

  • Print quality does not match the sharpness of screen printing on high-volume runs
  • Washability is slightly less durable than screen printing over time
  • Volume discounts are smaller compared to screen printing on large orders

Tips for Getting the Best Results From Your DTF Order

To get the most out of your DTF transfer, a few simple design choices make a big difference. First, try to keep ink coverage minimal — large solid fills can affect the feel of the garment after washing. In addition, using the shirt color as part of the design reduces ink coverage and improves the overall look.

When it comes to washing, turning the garment inside out on a cold cycle and using a cool dryer — or hang drying — is strongly recommended. However, if you follow these guidelines, the transfer will hold up well through regular use. Our team is always happy to review your design before production to ensure the best possible result.
